Australian Capital Territory

Discussions on networking schools and public libraries. Wanniassa high is participating in the Global Schoolhouse project.

All Territory Departments are linked via x25.

The Australian Capital Territory Education Information Network (ACTEIN) program is an initiative funded by the Australian National University (ANU), the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), the University of Canberra and the Australian Catholic University - Signadou campus. This is a pilot program to introduce the Internet to the ACT K-12 education environment.

In May 1994 the ACTEIN pilot program began with provision of dialup IP Internet access to 16 primary and secondary schools and the O'Connell Education Centre (the ACT education resource centre) located in Canberra, Australia.

This service is supported by a gopher server and a web server.

New South Wales

Environmental Protection Agency.

The EPA has a connection to AARnet - epa.nsw.gov.au

State Library

The State Library maintains ILANET which gives mail and dial up access to public libraries in the State to the Internet . They are planning to extent this to dial up SLIP over the phone system and X25. They also plan an experimental gopher server.

Northern Territory

No material collected.

Queensland

The the 1994 QUESTNet conference a number of papers were presented outlining plans for the connection of the Queensland Government bodies to Questnet/AARRnet.

The most directly applicable paper is- Kidston, John CITEC - A link between Government Networks and the Internet.

This paper should be available online shortly.

The Queensland Government, as a participant in a co-operative arrangement between the Governments of Australia, applies standard terms and conditions relating to the acquisition of information technology and telecommunication (IT&T) products and services; ie. the Government Information Technology Conditions (GITC). Detials of this are mounted on the QUT gopher service.

South Australia

Education Department

The S.A. Education Department provides the Nexus service via Telecom for schools in SA and elsewhere. Via x400 this has an email link to AARNet.

State Library

Has an AARNet connection and is working on services.

Tasmania

The Tasmanian Government maintains two web servers-

It is significant that the Premier's department has this role and so far this appears to be the highest 'level' of Government presently with direct internet representation.

Their server is still under construction and most of their information is still served through their gopher server which is similar to many university CWIS systems.

The Departmental attitude to this service can be asseses by the observation that it provides links to information service on the game of cricket but little on the internal functions of the Department

It also supplies some information on the Department of Treasury & Finance The service is maintained by Michael G. Brown who is Joint Chair of the Communications, Distribution and Data Interchange Working Group which presumably is the Tasmanian equivalent of their IESC.

Claremont College also maintains a web server with assistance from the University.

Victoria

State Library

Has a network connection and is running email.

Western Australia

A group in the Treasury Department is studying policy implications.
